About:

In spring 2025, Maydan Market will open in LA’s West Adams neighborhood, the first West Coast project by Rose Previte, founder of DC’s Michelin-starred Maydan, Compass Rose, Medina, and Kirby Club restaurants. Maydan in DC first opened in 2017 drawing critical acclaim as Best New Restaurant in Bon Appetit, FOOD & WINE, and GQ, nominated by the James Beard Foundation for both Best New Restaurant and Outstanding Wine Program, and earning a Michelin star. Compass Rose opened in 2014 winning the RAMMY for best casual restaurant in the nation’s capital and one of the Washington Post’s “Favorite Places to Eat.” 

This new 10,000-square-foot market will be a home for small businesses to flourish, anchored by a live fire hearth, like its DC namesake restaurant. Inspired by markets from around the world, Maydan Market will bring diverse gems together under one roof including a Maydan restaurant and bar; Compass Rose, an indoor/outdoor patio bar with bites, cocktails, and natural wine; and will be home to five Los Angeles food businesses each with their own distinctive cuisine and critical acclaim.

Sook brings you special things from special places. Nestled in Maydan Market in Los Angeles, Sook is a marketplace filled with thoughtfully curated teas, spices, and snacks from our team and founders from the MENA region.

Position: Retail Manager - Sook

Reports To: Compass Rose AGM, VP of People and Culture, Director of Restaurants, and Founders

Salary range: $23-27/hour(DOE) + tips

Purpose: The Sook Retail Manager provides leadership at the retail level. Under the direction of the Compass Rose AGM and Director of Restaurants, the Retail Manager directs and supports the management and hourly team members to ensure that Sook presents the culture and values of No White Plates, creating a positive, respectful and professional work environment for all employees. This position works closely with our Founder in the creation and development of Sook operations.

Who You Are: 

• Two (2) years of experience in a retail and/or food and beverage service environment
• Must like openings, be flexible and creative 
• Deep knowledge of retail operations, procedures / processes, retail sales, inventory, and scheduling
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills
• High-level organizational skills with multi-tasking capabilities 
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities and manage workloads with minimal direction
• Dependable, highly motivated and high attention to detail and follow through 
• Passion and a commitment to delivering outstanding customer service
• Flexibility to work mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
• View setbacks and challenges as learning opportunities and a chance to enhance performance
• Knowledge of design instruments such as Adobe Illustrator and some form of history working with design and creative pursuits
• Develop and maintain a flexible mindset with regard to creative aspects at the retail level including label design, product procurement, in-store layout, collaborations, social media e-commerce growth and more
• RBS Certified
• Food Handler’s Card

What You Do: 

• Work with FOH management to operate Sook to the No White Plate’s standard, following all company SOPs
• Manage housekeeping systems and opening and closing checklists including implementing new policies and procedures, 
• Actively monitor food and beverage quality at Sook to ensure adherence with the company’s standards. Provide timely feedback to FOH managers and help lead action to correct any issues when needed. 
• Understand and execute all aspects of the company’s retail operation to include, but not limited to, managing store inventory, overseeing packaging of products, sales, ordering, scheduling, creative direction, and anything else directly related to Sook operations.
• Assist with developing and implementing branding and advertising strategies for Sook 
• Along with the Compass AGM, create the schedule every two weeks and ensure adequate staffing across your shop while adhering to weekly + monthly budgets

Operations

• Create marketing, store design, visual identity and overall sales strategy alongside Founder
• Technology and platform use - (GoTab, G-Suite, etc.)
• In addition to in-store retail sales, oversee the launch, fulfillment and shipment of e-commerce sales of Sook products (to launch after initial Market opening)
• Research and recommend future retail and white label products in Sook
• Execute design assets, when necessary, under the guidance of the Founder.
• Represent, support, and protect the brand as stated in company handbooks 

People 

• Set an example for positivity, professionalism and hospitality among team
• Actively work toward reaching sales goals by leading team with clear customer service expectations through training, leadership and sales strategies
• Provide clear, constructive + positive feedback and delegate tasks clearly to shop team each day
• Work with other FOH team members to provide service to the NWP standard
• Effectively communicating with management on a consistent basis

Physical Requirements

• Able to work 8-hour plus shifts
• Able to stand, sit or walk for extended periods of time
• Able to grasp, lift and/or carry up to 50 lbs. as needed
• Finger/hand dexterity to operate bar tools and knives
• Able to withstand changes in temperature, steam and heat
• Able to work in a confined area
• Must possess hearing, visual and sensory abilities to observe and detect emergency situations; also, to distinguish product, taste, texture, temperature, presentation and preparation
